James Matthew Valentine (born 12 September 1961 – died 22 April 2026) was a talented Australian musician, radio host, and television presenter. He was well-known for playing the saxophone in several popular bands. These included Jo Jo Zep, Models, and Absent Friends. James also entertained many people through his work on TV and radio.

Early Life and Learning

James Matthew Valentine was born in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, on 12 September 1961. His father sold cars, and his mother taught public speaking. She also worked part-time as a radio announcer. James had two older brothers.

He went to Ballarat Grammar School. There, he learned to play the saxophone. He often performed in his local area. In the early 1980s, James moved to Melbourne to study at university. However, he soon started getting music jobs. He became very focused on his dream of becoming a jazz musician.

A Career in Music

James Valentine began his professional music journey in 1982. He joined a group called Jo Jo Zep, led by Joe Camilleri.

Joining Famous Bands

Later, James played saxophone in a covers band called Diana Boss and the Extremes. This band performed songs by The Supremes. Other members included Kate Ceberano on vocals and James Freud from the band Models.

After this band finished, the members of Models asked James to join them on tour. He became a full-time member of Models in late 1984. He played saxophone with them until 1987. During his time with Models, he appeared on their albums Out of Mind, Out of Sight (1985) and Models' Media (1986).

In 1989, James joined another band called Absent Friends. He played saxophone and clarinet for them. They released one album, Here's Looking Up Your Address, in 1990. James also worked with Wendy Matthews on her first solo album, Émigré, in 1990.

On Air: Radio and TV

James Valentine was a familiar face and voice on Australian television and radio.

Hosting Popular Shows

From 1987 to 1990, he hosted The Afternoon Show on ABC TV. This was a popular children's afternoon TV series. He continued working at the ABC, presenting shows like TVTV and later The Mix.

On the radio, James presented the Afternoons show on ABC Radio Sydney. He also hosted Upbeat on ABC Jazz every Sunday morning. He even wrote and performed funny comedy sketches for the ABC's Humour Australia website.

From 2010 to 2013, James narrated Come Dine with Me Australia. He also narrated Celebrity Come Dine With Me Australia from 2012 to 2014. In December 2021, he became the host of ABC Radio Sydney's Breakfast show. He took over from Wendy Harmer and Robbie Buck.

At the end of 2023, it was announced that James would return to the afternoon radio program. Craig Reucassel then took over the breakfast show.

James announced his retirement from radio on 2 February 2026. He wanted to focus on his health and spend time with his family.

Author for Young Readers

Beyond music and broadcasting, James Valentine was also a writer. He wrote a series of books especially for teenage boys. This included a science fiction trilogy called JumpMan.

Later Life and Legacy

In March 2024, James Valentine faced some serious health challenges. He continued to manage his health, but sadly, he passed away on 22 April 2026. He was 64 years old.

Just weeks before his passing, James was recognized for his contributions to Australia. He was approved to be appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia. This is a very special honor. Governor-general Sam Mostyn shared this news with ABC Radio.
