What Was The Afternoon Show?
The Afternoon Show was a magazine-style program. This means it had different segments, like a magazine has different articles. It was a fun way to introduce and connect all the cartoons and live-action shows that kids loved to watch.
The show featured many different types of programs. You could see exciting cartoons like The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Inspector Gadget, and Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Other popular cartoons included Count Duckula, Danger Mouse, and Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Besides cartoons, The Afternoon Show also aired a variety of live-action shows. These included comedy, drama, adventure, and even game shows. Some well-known international shows were Doctor Who, Grange Hill, and the Degrassi series. Australian shows like Behind the News and Secret Valley were also part of the fun. Sometimes, the show even played music videos!
Meet the Presenters
Over the years, a few different people hosted The Afternoon Show. The first host was James Valentine, who presented the show from 1987 to 1990. He was a familiar face for many young viewers.
After James Valentine left, Basia Bonkowski and Stephanie Osfield took turns hosting for a while. Then, in May 1991, a new permanent host joined the team. This was Michael Tunn, who was only 17 years old at the time! He was Australia's youngest professional radio presenter. Michael Tunn continued to host the show until it finished in late 1993.
Summer Fun: Special Episodes
In January 1993, The Afternoon Show had a special "Summer Edition." This version included five extra programs to keep kids entertained during the holidays. It brought back popular reruns like The Ratties and Roger Ramjet. It also introduced new shows, such as the American cartoon Fantastic Max and British dramas like Dodgem and The Gift.
What Happened Next?
After The Afternoon Show ended in December 1993, a new music series took its place. This show was called Loud, and it started airing on April 11, 1994. Interestingly, Michael Tunn, who had hosted The Afternoon Show, also became the host of Loud.
Loud was a half-hour show focused on music. It featured music videos, reviews of video games and movies, and stories about youth culture. Michael Tunn would also interview bands and musicians. Loud was shown on ABC from Monday to Thursday afternoons at 5:30 pm. The final episode of Loud was broadcast on June 16, 1994.
