How He Was Elected
James Louis Word ran in several elections to become a state representative.
Elections in 2008
In 2008, the seat for District 16 became open. This happened when Earnest Brown left the Legislature. James Word ran in the Democratic primary election on May 20, 2008. He was one of three candidates. He received the most votes, with 1,253 votes (38.9%).
Because no one won more than half the votes, there was a runoff election on June 10. James Word won this runoff election with 1,269 votes (67.1%). After winning the primary, he ran in the general election on November 4, 2008. He was the only candidate, so he won without opposition.
Elections in 2010
In 2010, James Word ran for re-election. He did not have any opponents in the Democratic primary election on May 18, 2010. He also had no opponents in the general election on November 2, 2010. This meant he won both times without anyone running against him.
Elections in 2012
James Word ran for re-election again in 2012. Just like in 2010, he did not face any opponents. He was unopposed in the Democratic primary on May 22, 2012. He was also unopposed in the general election on November 6, 2012.
Earlier Election in 2000
Before serving in District 16, James Word ran for a different seat. In 2000, he ran for the District 73 seat. He was in a three-way Democratic primary election. However, he lost that election to Booker Clemons. Booker Clemons then won the general election without opposition.
