James Louis Word (born around 1953) is an American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. From 2009 to 2015, he served in the Arkansas House of Representatives for District 16. This means he was one of the people who helped make laws for the state of Arkansas. He could not run for this job again in 2014 because of rules about how many times someone can serve.
His Education
James Louis Word went to college to learn and prepare for his career.
- He earned his first college degree, called a bachelor's degree, from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
- Later, he earned a special advanced degree called a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. This degree often helps people work in government or public service.
How He Became a Representative
To become a state representative, people usually have to win elections. Here's how James Louis Word got elected:
Running for Office
- In 2000, he first tried to become a representative for District 73. He ran in the Democratic primary election, which is like a first round of voting where people from the same party choose their best candidate. He didn't win that time.
- In 2008, the election districts changed, and he ran for District 16. The person who had the job before him, Earnest Brown, was leaving. James Louis Word won the primary election and then a runoff election. A runoff election happens when no one gets enough votes in the first primary. After winning these, he was the only candidate left for the main election, so he won the seat.
Re-election Campaigns
- In 2010, James Louis Word ran for re-election. He was the only person from his party running in the primary election, and he was also the only candidate in the main election. This meant he won without anyone running against him.
- In 2012, the same thing happened. He was unopposed in both the primary and the general election, so he won his seat again easily.
James Louis Word served three terms as a state representative. After his third term ended in 2015, he could not run again because of "term limits." Term limits are rules that say how many times a person can be elected to the same job.
