The James and Lydia Canning Fuller House in Skaneateles, New York is a historic home. It is special because it was used three times as a safe place on the Underground Railroad. Who Were James and Lydia Fuller?
James Fuller and Lydia Charleton got married in 1815. They were married in Bristol at a Friends Meeting House. This was the same year their house was built.
James and Lydia were members of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers. Quakers believed that all people are equal. Because of this belief, many Quakers were against slavery. They worked hard to end it.
Helping Others: The Anti-Slavery Movement
James Canning Fuller was very active in the fight against slavery. In 1838, he became the secretary of the Skaneateles Anti-Slavery Society. This society was a group of people who wanted to end slavery. They worked to convince others that slavery was wrong.
In 1840, James Fuller traveled to London. He was a delegate to the World's Anti-Slavery Convention. A delegate is someone chosen to represent a group. At this convention, people from all over the world met to discuss how to end slavery.
