Discovering Jamestown, Texas
How Jamestown Began
Jamestown was first settled in 1846. It quickly grew into a busy place. A post office was built there, which was important for sending and receiving mail. The main business in Jamestown was growing and shipping cotton. Cotton was a very important crop in Texas at that time.
Jamestown During the Civil War
During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Jamestown played a small part. In 1861, a group of soldiers was formed in Jamestown. This group was called Company G of the 14th Texas Voluntary Infantry. They joined the Confederate States Army.
Later Years and Decline
Over time, Jamestown began to change. In 1903, the post office was moved to a nearby town called Overton. This often happens when a community's population or importance shifts. The last business in Jamestown closed its doors in 1964.
