Jamie Bennell's Football Journey
Jamie Bennell grew up in Bunbury, Western Australia. He went to Bunbury Senior High School. Before joining the AFL, he played for the Carey Park Football Club. This club is part of the South West Football League (SWFL). He also played for the colts team at the Swan Districts Football Club.
Joining the Melbourne Demons
In 2008, Jamie was chosen by the Melbourne Football Club. This happened during the 2008 National draft. He was the 35th player picked overall. Jamie made his first AFL appearance in 2009. He debuted alongside Neville Jetta. Neville was a friend from primary school in Bunbury. They also played together at Swan Districts.
During his first year, Jamie mostly played in defense. He helped stop small forwards from the other team. He played 16 games in his first season.
Moving to Attack and Injuries
In his second season, Jamie changed his role. He started playing as a small forward. He was very good at picking up loose balls near the goals. In one game, he was nominated for both "mark of the year" and "goal of the year." This was against the Western Bulldogs. A few weeks later, he scored four goals in a game. This was his best scoring game ever.
Towards the end of the 2012 season, Jamie got a serious knee injury. This happened while playing against the Fremantle Football Club. After the season, Melbourne decided not to keep him on their team.
Playing for the West Coast Eagles
Even after being let go by Melbourne, Jamie got another chance. In December 2012, he was picked again in the 2013 Rookie draft. This time, the West Coast Eagles chose him. He was the 26th player picked in that draft.
Jamie played for the Eagles until the end of the 2016 AFL season. In his final season, he only played two games. After the 2016 season, the West Coast Eagles also decided not to keep him. He finished his AFL career having played 87 games in total.
