Her Early Life and School
Jamie Paik was born in Canada. Her dad is a scientist, and her mom is an artist who paints. Jamie loved learning about how things work.
She went to the University of British Columbia for her first university degree. There, she studied mechanical engineering. This is a field where you learn to design and build machines.
Later, she earned her PhD from Seoul National University. A PhD is a very high degree you get after a lot of advanced study and research. Her research was supported by Samsung Electronics. For her PhD, she studied the arms and legs of robots that look like humans.
Amazing Robot Inventions
After her PhD, Jamie Paik worked as a researcher at Pierre and Marie Curie University in France. She helped create special tools for surgery. One of her inventions was a tiny robot called JAIMY. This robot is only 5 millimeters big! It helps doctors stitch things up during keyhole surgery. This robot is even used by doctors today.
Then, she moved to Harvard University in the United States. There, she continued her research on robots. She worked with other famous scientists like Erik Demaine, Daniela L. Rus, and Robert Wood.
In 2012, Jamie Paik started her own lab called the Reconfigurable Robotics Lab. This lab is at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. Her team focuses on "robotic origami," which they call robogami. Imagine robots that can fold and unfold themselves, just like paper origami!
