Jamie Simpson's Early Life
Jamie Simpson was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. When he was young, his mom encouraged him to join the Fitzroy Junior Rugby League club. He went to St. Brendan's College because of its great rugby league program. There, he learned a lot about self-discipline.
In 2001, at just 15 years old, Jamie was chosen for his school's top rugby team. He played in important games and even helped his school's second team win a big local competition in 2002.
Facing a Big Challenge
In August 2002, Jamie was diagnosed with cancer. He played a game just before his team found out about his illness. From 2002 to 2003, Jamie went through chemotherapy for a serious type of cancer called Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Even while he was getting treatment, Jamie stayed involved in rugby league. He volunteered as an assistant coach for a school team. His positive attitude inspired many people around him. A coach and his wife even named their son after Jamie because of his courage.
While Jamie was in the hospital, the famous Brisbane Broncos coach, Wayne Bennett, sent him an autographed book. It had a special message: "Tough time comes and goes, but tough guys last forever." A family friend, Scott Minto, also encouraged him to become a professional player.
In 2009, Jamie was nominated for the Ken Stephen Medal. This award is for rugby league players who do great work helping their community. Jamie was recognized for visiting and helping young people who had cancer.
Jamie Simpson's Rugby Career
Jamie started his senior rugby career in 2005 and 2006. He played for teams like Aspley and the Toowoomba Clydesdales. These teams were connected to the Brisbane Broncos. Jamie scored many tries for Aspley in the Queensland Cup.
He was chosen to play for the Queensland City team in 2007. However, he was not picked to play for the main Brisbane Broncos team at that time.
Playing in the NRL
In 2008, Jamie joined the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He made his first-grade debut in round 13, where he scored a try against the New Zealand Warriors. His first season in the National Rugby League (NRL) was very successful. Many people thought his strong playing helped the Rabbitohs improve that season.
In 2009, Jamie had another good season. He scored three tries in one game during round 20. In 2011, Jamie signed a three-year deal to play for the Huddersfield Giants. He played nine games for them but had shoulder surgery, which kept him from playing for four months. He left the team in December 2011 and planned to return to Australia.
