Jamie Soward (born 13 November 1984) is an Australian former professional rugby league player. He also coached the St. George Illawarra Dragons Women team in the NRLW.
Jamie played for the Sydney Roosters, Penrith Panthers, and the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He helped the Dragons win the 2010 NRL Premiership. He also played in England for the London Broncos. Jamie represented New South Wales in State of Origin and the Indigenous All-Stars team.
Early Years in Rugby League
Jamie Soward was born in Canberra, Australia. He started playing junior rugby league for the Wagga Wagga Kangaroos. Later, he joined the Canberra Raiders system.
He then moved to the Sydney Roosters and played for their Jersey Flegg team. In 2004, he helped the Roosters win the premiership by kicking two important field goals at the end of the game.
Jamie Soward's Playing Career
Starting with the Roosters (2005-2007)
Jamie made his first NRL game for the Sydney Roosters in 2005. This was in Round 9 against the Newcastle Knights. Six days before his debut, his father passed away.
In Round 17, Jamie scored his first NRL try against the Newcastle Knights. He played 7 games and scored 2 tries in his first year. In 2006, he played 14 games, scoring 4 tries and kicking one goal.
Jamie also played in the 2006 NSW Cup Grand Final for Newtown Jets, which was the Roosters' feeder club. They lost the final closely to Parramatta Eels.
In 2007, Jamie left the Roosters mid-season to join the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He had played only one game for the Roosters that year.
Joining the Dragons (2007-2013)
Just one week after leaving the Roosters, Jamie played his first game for the St. George Illawarra Dragons. This was in Round 12 against the Brisbane Broncos. He helped his new team win 11–4.
In Round 14, Jamie scored his first try for the Dragons. In Round 17, he set a new record for the Dragons by scoring 22 points in one game. He scored a try and kicked 9 goals in their big win against the Canberra Raiders. In his first year with the Dragons, he played 14 games, scored 7 tries, kicked 38 goals, and one field goal.
In 2008, Jamie signed a new contract with the Dragons until 2010. He played 19 games, scored 5 tries, kicked 54 goals, and one field goal.
Jamie also played for the Indigenous Dreamtime team in 2008. He scored a try and kicked 5 goals in their win against the New Zealand Māori rugby league team.
Big Seasons and a Premiership (2009-2011)
In 2009, Jamie scored 21 points in the annual Anzac Day match against his old team, the Sydney Roosters. He became the first player to reach 200 points in the 2009 season.
Jamie played for Country in the City vs Country match. He was named the Dally M five-eighth of the year. He played 26 games, scored 12 tries, kicked 90 goals, and 6 field goals for the Dragons.
In 2010, Jamie played for the first-ever Indigenous All Stars team. He scored the winning try in their 16–12 victory. He also signed a new contract with the Dragons until 2013.
Jamie became the Dragons' all-time top point scorer, passing Mark Riddell. He played his 100th NRL game in Round 22. In the Preliminary Final, he kicked a field goal from 35 metres out to win the game for the Dragons. This sent them to the 2010 NRL Grand Final.
On 3 October 2010, Jamie helped the St. George Illawarra Dragons win their first Premiership as a joint club. They beat the Sydney Roosters 32–8 in the Grand Final. Jamie set up the first try and kicked 6 goals. He had a very successful year, playing 26 games, scoring 6 tries, kicking 84 goals, and 5 field goals.
In 2011, Jamie was chosen for the "Blues in waiting" squad for future New South Wales Origin teams. He played for the Indigenous All Stars again. He also helped the Dragons win the 2011 World Club Challenge against the Wigan Warriors.
Jamie was selected to play for New South Wales in the 2011 State of Origin series. He played well, kicking goals and setting up a try in Game 2. He played his 100th NRL game for the Dragons in Round 20. He played 23 games, scored 4 tries, kicked 68 goals, and 5 field goals that season.
Later Years with Dragons and Move to England (2012-2013)
In 2012, Jamie played 20 games, scored 2 tries, kicked 43 goals, and 3 field goals for the Dragons. He played his 150th career game in Round 26.
In 2013, Jamie's performance wasn't as strong. He signed a 4-year contract with the Penrith Panthers. He was then dropped to the NSW Cup team. After this, he left the Dragons to join the London Broncos in the Super League for the rest of the 2013 season.
Jamie played 12 games for the Dragons in his final year with them. In London, he scored 67 points in just 9 games. He also helped the team reach the 2013 Challenge Cup semi-finals.
Time with the Penrith Panthers (2014-2016)
In 2014, Jamie joined the Penrith Panthers. He played in the 2014 Auckland Nines tournament. He made his club debut for the Panthers in Round 1, helping them win.
In Round 9, Jamie scored his first try for the Panthers. In the Finals, he kicked a game-winning field goal in the last minute against the Sydney Roosters. He had a great first year with the Panthers, playing 25 games, scoring 7 tries, kicking 63 goals, and one field goal.
In 2015, Jamie had back surgery and missed some games. When he returned, his performance was inconsistent. The Panthers had a tough season. Jamie played 16 games and kicked 22 goals. He later said he would leave the game if he didn't play better in 2016.
In 2016, Jamie played for the Indigenous All Stars again. In Round 10, he scored a try and kicked 5 goals, ending a two-year try-scoring drought. However, his form dropped, and he was moved to the NSW Cup.
On 30 June 2016, Jamie left the Panthers and rejoined the London Broncos. He played 12 games, scored 1 try, and kicked 32 goals for the Panthers that season.
Retirement from Playing
On 7 November 2016, Jamie Soward announced he was retiring from professional rugby league. This ended his 14-year playing career.
Life After Playing Rugby League
After retiring, Jamie Soward started working in sports media. In 2017, he joined Fox Sports. The next year, he became a commentator for Channel 9, covering the Canterbury Cup NSW competition.
In 2019, Jamie joined the 2GB Continuous Call Team as a co-commentator for Saturday night games. He also started working for Macquarie Sports Radio. In 2020, he launched his own podcast called "Sweet and Soward."
In 2021, Jamie joined the St. George Illawarra Dragons coaching staff as a kicking coach. That same year, he was named the head coach for the 2022 St. George Illawarra NRL Women's Premiership team. He coached the team until September 2024.
In September 2023, Jamie was also appointed as the head coach for the Samoa Women's team.
