Sister Jamie Theresa Phelps (born October 24, 1941) is an American Catholic theologian. She is also an Adrian Dominican Sister. Phelps is African American and is well-known for her work in womanist theology. This type of theology looks at faith from the perspective of Black women.

About Jamie Phelps
Jamie Phelps was born in Alabama on October 24, 1941. She was the youngest of six children in a Catholic family. In 1959, she decided to become an Adrian Dominican Sister. This means she joined a religious community of women.
Her Education and Teaching Career
Phelps studied for her PhD in systematic theology at the Catholic University of America. She finished her advanced degree in 1989. Her special research was about the mission of the church, called The Mission Ecclesiology of John R. Slattery.
Sister Phelps has taught at several universities. These include Catholic Theological Union at Chicago, Loyola University, Chicago, and Seattle University. She also spent eight years as a director at Xavier University in New Orleans. There, she was the Katharine Drexel Professor of Systematic Theology.
Contributions to Black Catholic Studies
Jamie Phelps helped restart important meetings for Black Catholic scholars. These meetings are called the Black Catholic Theological Symposium. They had met twice before in 1978 and 1979. Thanks to her efforts, the meetings began again in 1991 and continue today.
Awards and Recognition
In 2010, Sister Phelps received a special honor. She was given the Ann O'Hara Graff Memorial Award. This award came from the Women's Seminar in Constructive Theology. It is part of the Catholic Theological Society of America.
