Early Life and Career Beginnings
Jan Pietrzak was born in Warsaw, Poland. In the 1960s, he helped start a student cabaret club called Hybrydy. A cabaret is a type of entertainment that includes singing, comedy, and drama, often performed in a small theater or club. This club was active from 1962 to 1967.
Founding Pod Egidą
In 1967, Pietrzak created another cabaret called Pod Egidą ("Under the Aegis"). This was a special kind of cabaret in Warsaw that often challenged the government's ideas. Jan Pietrzak became one of the most well-known voices against the communist government in Poland at that time, which was called the People's Republic of Poland.
Songs for Freedom
Jan Pietrzak became famous across Poland and even internationally during the time of the Solidarity movement. Solidarity was a large trade union movement that fought for workers' rights and political change in Poland.
The Anthem of Solidarity
Pietrzak was especially recognized for his protest song called "Żeby Polska była Polską" ("So that Poland Could be Poland"). A protest song is a song that expresses disagreement with something, often a government or a social issue. This song, with music by Włodzimierz Korcz, became like an unofficial anthem for the Solidarity period in Poland's history. It was a very important song for people who wanted freedom and change.
