Jan Szyszko (born April 19, 1944 – died October 9, 2019) was a Polish expert in forestry, which is the science of managing forests. He was also a university professor who taught about forests and a politician. A politician is someone who works in government to make decisions for a country.

He served as the Minister of Environment several times. This job means he was in charge of protecting nature and the environment in Poland. He held this important role in the governments led by different Prime Ministers, including Jerzy Buzek, Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, Jarosław Kaczyński, Beata Szydło, and Mateusz Morawiecki.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Jan Szyszko was chosen by the people to be a member of the Sejm, which is like the Polish Parliament. He was first elected on September 25, 2005. He received 7,042 votes in the Warsaw area.

He was a candidate for the Law and Justice political party. He served in the Parliament for four terms in a row. This means he was re-elected in 2007, 2011, and 2015.

Awards and Recognition

In 2008, Jan Szyszko received a special award called the Ettore Majorana Award from the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. This academy is a group of scientists chosen by the Pope.

He was also given the title of honorary citizen in two towns: Krościenko nad Dunajcem and Wieluń. This means these towns recognized him for his important work and contributions.
