Jane Ann Cooper Bennett was born in 1960 in Manly, Australia. She grew up in Seaforth with her mother and grandparents. Jane went to Mackellar Girls High School and Ku-ring-gai High School.
In 1979, she started studying art at the Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education. She earned a Diploma of Fine Arts in 1982. The next year, she completed a Graduate Diploma in Art Studies.
Jane Bennett has won many art awards. She was a finalist in the important Sir John Sulman Prize three times. She was also a finalist five times for the Dobell Prize. For the Wynne Prize, she was a finalist six times. She won the Wynne Prize's Pring Prize for Watercolour in 1990, 1995, and 1996. In 1995, she also won the Wynne Trustees’ Prize for Watercolour. Overall, she has won more than 120 art prizes during her career, which has lasted over 30 years.
