Jane Hippisley, later known as Mrs. Green (1719–1791), was a famous British actress. She was known for playing many different types of characters on stage.

Early Life and First Roles

Jane Hippisley was born in 1719. Her father, John Hippisley, was also an actor. Her sister, Elizabeth Hippisley, was an actress too, but had smaller roles.

Jane first appeared on stage at the Covent Garden Theatre in London. This was on March 18, 1735. She played the character Cherry in a play called The Stratagem.

Becoming Mrs. Green

Jane Hippisley worked with the famous actor David Garrick. She played Ophelia for him when he first started acting at Goodman's Fields. She also created some well-known characters. She was the first actress to play Kitty Pry in The Lying Valet. She also played Biddy in Miss in Her Teens.

Around 1747 or 1748, Jane started using the name Mrs. Green. She became the first actress to play the character Mrs. Malaprop. This role was in a famous play called The Rivals.

Later Career and Farewell

Mrs. Green played many different roles throughout her career. Some of her famous characters included Miss Prue, Anne Page, and Perdita. She also played Ophelia, Miss Hoyden, and Nerissa. Later in her career, she was known for playing older ladies and helpful servants. She was considered one of the best actresses for these types of roles, second only to Mrs. Clive.

She also performed in Dublin, Ireland, in the early 1750s. She continued acting for many years. One of her last known performances was in Bristol on July 4, 1781. She played the Irish Widow in that show.

Mrs. Green said goodbye to the London stage on May 26, 1780. Her final role in London was Mrs. Hardcastle. She passed away at her home in Jacob's Well, Bristol, in the winter of 1791.
