Professor Jane Grimson is a brilliant Irish computer engineer. She is known for her important work in making healthcare better using technology. She is a special Fellow and Pro-Chancellor at Trinity College Dublin, a famous university in Ireland.

Education and Early Career

Jane went to Alexandra College in Dublin. She made history by being the first woman to graduate with an engineering degree from Trinity College Dublin in 1970. She even earned top honors and a special gold medal!

She continued her studies, getting a master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Toronto in 1971. Later, in 1981, she earned her PhD from the University of Edinburgh.

In 1980, Jane started working as a Computer Science teacher at Trinity College Dublin. She spent her whole career there. Before she retired in 2014, she held a special position in Health Informatics.

Improving Healthcare with Technology

Professor Grimson's main research was in Health Informatics. This field is all about using Information and Communications Technology (like computers and the internet) to make healthcare safer and better for everyone. Imagine using apps or special computer systems to help doctors and nurses!

Leadership Roles

Jane Grimson was elected as a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin in 1991. She held many important leadership roles at the university. From 1996 to 1999, she was the Dean of Engineering and Systems Sciences. She was also the Vice-Provost from 2001 to 2005. She was the first woman to ever hold these big jobs at Trinity College Dublin. In 2016, she was appointed Pro-Chancellor of the University of Dublin.

Professor Grimson also led many important organizations. She was the President of Engineers Ireland from 1999 to 2000, again being the first woman to do so. She also led the Irish Academy of Engineering and the Irish Computer Society. From 1999 to 2006, she was President of the Healthcare Informatics Society of Ireland.

In 2007, she helped start the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). She was its first Director of Health Information. She worked to create national rules for how health information should be used. In 2014, she was the Acting Chief Executive of HIQA just before she retired.

She also served on many important boards, helping to guide organizations like Science Foundation Ireland and the Health Research Board.

Supporting Women in STEM

Professor Grimson is a strong supporter of women in engineering and science. She helped create WiSER (the Centre for Women in Science and Engineering Research) at Trinity College Dublin. This center helps more women get involved in science and engineering.

She also led a committee that worked to increase the number of women in Science, Engineering, and Technology. She is an honorary member of Women in Technology and Science.

Awards and Recognition

Professor Grimson has received many awards for her amazing work.

  • In 2004, she was chosen as an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
  • She received the O'Moore Medal in 2007 for her contributions to Health Informatics.
  • In 2009, she became a member of the Royal Irish Academy.

Personal Life

Professor Grimson's father was Professor Bill Wright, who was also a Civil Engineering professor at Trinity College Dublin. She married Bill Grimson, who was also an Engineering student at Trinity.
