Jane Elizabeth Harley, Countess of Oxford and Countess Mortimer (born Jane Scott; 1774–1824) was an English noblewoman. She was known for supporting the Reform movement. She was also a friend of famous poet Lord Byron.
Early Life and Marriage
Jane Elizabeth Scott was born in 1774. Her father was Reverend James Scott. She grew up learning about new ideas like those from the French Revolution. She also supported the idea of political reform in Britain.
In 1794, Jane married Edward Harley, 5th Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer. After her marriage, she became known as the Countess of Oxford and Countess Mortimer. She was also a friend of the Princess of Wales.
Supporting Reform
The Reform movement aimed to change the British political system. It wanted to make it fairer for more people. Jane Elizabeth Harley was a strong supporter of these ideas. She was connected to many important people who also believed in reform, including Francis Burdett.
She was also friends with the famous poet Lord Byron. Their friendship lasted from 1812 to 1813. Even though her personal life was sometimes talked about, she remained connected to important figures of her time. For example, Lady Caroline Lamb, another person connected to Byron, was one of her few friends. Lady Caroline even wrote about her in her novel Glenarvon.
Her Children

Jane Elizabeth Harley had several children. They included:
- Edward Harley, Lord Harley (born 1800 – died 1828).
- Alfred Harley, 6th Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer.
- Lady Jane Elizabeth Harley. She married Henry Bickersteth, who later became Baron Langdale.
- Lady Charlotte Mary Harley (born 1801 or 1809, died 1880). In 1823, she married Anthony Bacon.
- Lady Anne Harley. She married Signor Giovanni Battista Rabitti Count St. George.
- Lady Frances Harley. She married Lt.-Col. Henry Vernon Harcourt, who was the son of the Archbishop of York.
