Jane Hungerford Milbank (born April 10, 1871 – died March 4, 1931) was an American woman who worked for women's right to vote. People who supported this cause were called suffragists. She was also known for starting a group called the Army of Columbians.

Her Early Life

Jane Hungerford Henry was born on April 10, 1871. Her hometown was Sparta, Georgia. As a young woman, she said she posed for the artist John La Farge. She claimed to be the model for two of his artworks, "Adoration" and "St. John."

Working for Change

Jane Milbank was famous for suggesting an "Army of Columbians." This was a group of women who would train like soldiers. She proposed this idea during World War I. She even designed a special uniform for them, which she wore herself.

She held training sessions every week. A few women joined her, practicing with wooden guns. Mrs. Milbank told people who doubted her, "My only fear is that they will be too savage warriors." She also thought that military training could help reduce arguments at home. By 1915, her program became official. It was called the International Order of Military Women, and Mrs. Milbank was in charge.

Mrs. Milbank was also a writer and a poet. She published a collection of short stories and poems. She used the name "J. Hungerford Milbank" for her book, which was titled Florence Gardiner Sings. She was a member of the Century Theatre Club for more than twenty years.

Her Family Life

Jane Milbank was married twice. Her first marriage was to Cedric (or Carl) Augustus Erlund in 1893. They had two sons together: Cambridge Erlund, born in 1896, and Charles Hungerford Erlund, born in 1901.

In 1904, she married Charles Budd Milbank. He passed away in 1920. Jane Hungerford Milbank died on March 4, 1931. She passed away in Freeport, Long Island.
