Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jane Jowitt (born May 14, 1770 – died August 3, 1846) was a talented writer from both Ireland and England. She was a poet, which means she wrote poems, and a memoirist, meaning she wrote her own life story.

Jane was born in Dublin, Ireland, into a family that had some money. However, her life changed after the Irish Rebellion of 1798, a big uprising in Ireland. Because of this, she moved to England.

When she arrived in Liverpool, England, she faced a tough time. Because of her Irish background, she was unfairly denied jobs. In her book, Memoirs, published in 1844, she wrote about how she had to walk all the way from Liverpool to London because she had no other way to travel.

Jane Jowitt's Life in England

After her long walk to London, Jane Jowitt lived in several English cities. She eventually settled down in Sheffield. There, she took on various small jobs to support herself.

She also started to become known as a poet. She was especially good at writing poems to remember important local people after they passed away. One of her most famous poems at the time was written to honor the wife of a powerful person known as "Earl Fitzwilliam." This was likely either Charlotte Ponsonby or Louisa Molesworth, who were married to William Fitzwilliam, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam.
