Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jane Win-Shih Liu is a smart Chinese-American computer scientist. She is famous for her work with real-time computing. This is about making computer systems respond very quickly, like in self-driving cars or medical devices. She used to be a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. She is also a special professor at National Tsing Hua University and a respected expert at the Academia Sinica. For a time, she was also the main editor for a big computer science magazine called IEEE Transactions on Computers.

Her Journey in Computer Science

Jane Liu studied electrical engineering at Cleveland State University. This field is all about how electricity works in things like computers and machines. She then earned her highest degree, a doctorate, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968. Her special research paper for this degree was about how reliable quantum mechanical communication systems are.

From 1972 until she retired in 2000, she was a teacher at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. While she was there, she was the main editor for IEEE Transactions on Computers from 1996 to 1999. After retiring from the university, she worked at Microsoft from 2000 to 2004. Then, she joined the Academia Sinica, which is a top research organization.

Books She Wrote

Jane Liu wrote a book called Real-Time Systems in 2000. She also helped write another book, Linear Systems Analysis, in 1975 with C. L. Liu.

Awards and Honors

In 1995, Jane Liu was chosen as an IEEE Fellow. This is a very high honor for engineers. She received it because of her important work on how to schedule tasks for computers that need to work in real-time. In 2005, the IEEE Technical Committee on Real-Time Systems gave her their Technical Achievement Award. This award recognized her great accomplishments in the field. Then, in 2008, she received the Information Science Honorary Medal from the Taiwan Institute of Information and Computing Machinery.

Her Family and Work

Jane Liu was married to Dave C.-L. Liu (1934–2020). Together, they started and led the Real Time and Embedded System Laboratory at the University of Illinois. This lab was a place where they studied and developed computer systems that work in real-time.
