Jane Maria Atkinson (born September 15, 1824, died September 29, 1914) was an amazing pioneer and writer. She was also the very first British woman to climb the famous Mount Taranaki in New Zealand!

Growing Up

Maria grew up in a family that followed the Unitarian faith. When her father, Christopher Richmond, passed away early, her family faced money problems. At 28 years old, Maria and her family decided to move to New Zealand. They traveled with other families like the Hursthouses, Richmonds, and Ronalds.

They arrived in Auckland on May 25, 1853. Later, they moved to the new New Plymouth settlement. On the ship journey, Maria met Arthur Samuel Atkinson, and they fell in love. They got married on December 30, 1854.

Life in New Zealand

When she first arrived, Maria was a pioneering housewife and mother. She and Arthur moved to Nelson, New Zealand in 1867. In Nelson, Maria became very active in her community.

She strongly supported women's right to vote. She also talked to many people about starting a college just for girls. Maria even guided a debate team, helping young people learn to share their ideas. The Atkinsons kindly let teachers from Nelson College for Girls use their home, which was called Fairfield House.
