Jang Seung-eop (1843–1897) was a very famous painter from Korea. He lived during the late Joseon Dynasty. People often called him by his pen name, Owon. He was so talented that a movie was made about his life! It was called Chi-hwa-seon and came out in 2002. Owon was one of the few artists who worked for the royal court during the Joseon Dynasty.
Owon's Early Life and Art
Jang Seung-eop grew up without his parents. He learned to paint while living with another family. When he was in his 20s, he got a big chance. A rich noble named Yi Ung-heon invited him to live in his home. This gave Owon the opportunity to paint a lot and improve his skills.
Soon, many people knew about his amazing talent. Owon painted many different kinds of pictures. He drew beautiful landscapes, which are scenes of nature. He also painted lovely flowers and pictures of everyday life.
The Three Great Painters
