Jaques Wagner (born March 16, 1951) is a Brazilian politician. He has held many important roles in the Brazilian government. He was the Governor of the state of Bahia for eight years. He also served as a Minister in the national government.
Since 2019, he has been a Senator for the state of Bahia. This means he helps make laws for the whole country.

Who is Jaques Wagner?
Jaques Wagner was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His parents were immigrants from Poland. They came to Brazil seeking a new life.
Early Life and Beginnings
When he was young, Jaques Wagner was part of a youth group called Habonim Dror. This group focused on community and social justice. He also studied at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.
Becoming a Politician
Jaques Wagner helped start the Workers' Party (PT). This is a major political party in Brazil. He also helped create the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT). This is a large union that helps workers.
In 1991, he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies. This is like being a representative in the national parliament. He served in this role for many years.
Serving as a Minister
Jaques Wagner has been a Minister in the Brazilian government several times. A Minister is in charge of a specific part of the government.
- From 2003 to 2004, he was the Minister of Labour and Employment. He worked on issues related to jobs and workers' rights.
- From 2005 to 2006, he was the Minister of Institutional Affairs. This role involves helping different parts of the government work together.
- In 2015, he became the Minister of Defence. In this job, he oversaw Brazil's armed forces.
- Later in 2015 and early 2016, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Presidency. This is a very important role, helping the President manage the government.
Serving Bahia as Governor
In 2007, Jaques Wagner became the Governor of Bahia. Bahia is a large state in Brazil. As Governor, he was responsible for leading the state government. He worked on improving life for people in Bahia.
He was re-elected in 2010 and served two terms. His time as Governor ended in 2014.
Senator for Bahia
After his time as Governor and Minister, Jaques Wagner continued his political career. Since 2019, he has been a Senator for the state of Bahia. As a Senator, he represents his state in the national parliament. He helps create and vote on laws for all of Brazil.
