Jaques Wagner (born March 16, 1951) is a well-known Brazilian politician. He has held many important jobs in the Brazilian government. For example, he was the Governor of the state of Bahia from 2007 to 2015. He also served as the Minister of Defence in 2015.

Since 2019, Jaques Wagner has been a Senator for the state of Bahia. This means he helps make laws for the whole country.

Jaques Wagner's Early Life

Jaques Wagner was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1951. His parents were immigrants from Poland. They were part of the Jewish community.

Youth and Political Beginnings

When he was young, Jaques Wagner was involved in a youth group called Habonim Dror. This group focused on ideas about labor and community. He later became one of the people who helped start the Workers' Party (PT). This is a major political party in Brazil.

He also helped create the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT). This is a very large union in Brazil. It helps protect the rights of workers and has millions of members.

Jaques Wagner has had a long and active career in politics. He has served in various important roles.

Serving Bahia as Governor

One of his most significant roles was being the Governor of Bahia. He served two terms, from 2007 to 2015. As Governor, he was in charge of leading the state government. He worked on improving life for the people of Bahia. He was reelected in the 2010 Bahia gubernatorial election.

Other Important Government Roles

Before becoming Governor, Jaques Wagner was a member of the Chamber of Deputies. This is like being a representative in the national parliament. He served there from 1991 to 2003.

He also held several positions as a Minister for the President of Brazil.

  • From 2003 to 2004, he was the Minister of Labour and Employment. In this role, he worked on issues related to jobs and workers' rights.
  • From 2005 to 2006, he was the Minister of Institutional Affairs. This job involved managing relationships between different parts of the government.
