The Jardine Juniper in 2011

The Jardine Juniper is a very old and famous tree. It's a type of tree called a Rocky Mountain juniper. You can find this special tree growing in Logan Canyon, which is part of the Cache National Forest. People once thought it was over 3,000 years old! However, scientists later found out it is actually around 1,500 years old. This amazing tree stands about 40 feet (12 meters) tall, and its trunk measures about 284 inches (721 cm) around.

Discovering the Ancient Tree

The Jardine Juniper was first found in 1923. A student named Maurice Blood Linford discovered it. He was studying at Utah State Agricultural College (USAC) at the time. Imagine finding such an old and large tree!

How the Jardine Juniper Got Its Name

This special tree was named after a very important person. His name was William Marion Jardine (1879–1955). He also went to Utah State Agricultural College, just like Maurice Linford. Mr. Jardine later became the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. This means he was a top government official who helped manage farming and forests for the country. Naming the tree after him was a way to honor his work.

How Old is the Jardine Juniper?

For a long time, people believed the Jardine Juniper was more than 3,000 years old. That would make it one of the oldest living things on Earth! But in the 1950s, scientists took small samples from the tree's core. These "core samples" are like tiny straws of wood that show the tree's growth rings. By counting these rings, scientists can figure out a tree's true age. They discovered the Jardine Juniper is actually around 1,500 years old. While not 3,000, 1,500 years is still incredibly old for a tree! It means this tree was growing long before many countries we know today even existed.
