Early Bands
Jarle Bernhoft grew up in Nittedal, Norway. When he was in high school, he started playing music.
Explicit Lyrics
One of his first bands was called Explicit Lyrics. Jarle and his friend Fridtjof "Joff" Nilsen were members. This band released three albums: Fleshpulse (1996), Flow (1997), and Lipshave (1998).
Span
After Explicit Lyrics, Jarle (who sang and wrote songs) and Joff (who played guitar) formed a new rock band called Span. They were joined by drummer Fredrik Wallumrød and bassist Vemund Stavnes. Span released two short albums called EPs, Baby's Come Back (2002) and Found (2003). They then released two successful full albums: Mass Distraction (2004) and Vs. Time (2005). The band stopped playing together in 2005, but they announced reunion shows for 2024!
Working with Other Artists
Jarle Bernhoft has also worked with many other Norwegian artists. He has played on their recordings and performed in their concerts. Some of these artists include Hanne Hukkelberg, Dadafon, and Bigbang. He even played in a band called Green Granadas, where he used the fun stage name Rod Hot!
Solo Career
Jarle Bernhoft started his solo career in 2008. His first solo album was called Ceramik City Chronicles. In 2010, he released a special double live album, 1:Man 2:Band. One part of the album was recorded at a small jazz café, showing his solo performances. The other part was recorded with a full band at bigger venues.
His second solo album, Solidarity Breaks, came out in 2011. This album was a huge hit in Norway and topped the Norwegian Albums Chart for seven weeks! From this album onwards, he started using the name Bern/hoft for his solo work. His 2014 album, Islander, was also very popular and reached number one in Norway.
In 2014, Bernhoft performed at the famous Glastonbury Festival in the UK. He even had a special performance of his song "Wind You Up" shown on BBC One.
