Jaroslav Šerých (born February 27, 1928 – died March 23, 2014) was a famous Czech painter, printmaker, and illustrator. He created many beautiful artworks, including paintings, prints, and drawings for books.

Life and Education

Jaroslav Šerých was born in a town called Německý Brod. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague in Prague. He graduated in 1955. After that, he continued to work there as a research student until 1960. His teachers included well-known artists like Vlastimil Rada, Vladimír Pukl, and Vladimír Silovský.

Artistic Style and Works

Šerých focused mainly on painting, making prints, illustrating books, and creating large artworks for buildings. He had a special way of making art. He often worked on copper plates, making them into reliefs. A relief is a kind of sculpture where the shapes are raised from a flat surface. Many of these copper plates were decorated with vitreous enamel. This is a shiny, glass-like coating that is melted onto metal.

Book Illustrations

Jaroslav Šerých was also very good at illustrating books. He won several "book of the year" awards for his work. He especially loved to illustrate fairy tale books. Some of the books he illustrated include Fairy Tales from Japan, Persian Fairy Tales, Indonesian Fairy Tales, and Tales of the Uncanny. His drawings helped bring these stories to life for many readers.

In the 1960s, Jaroslav Šerých took part in many art shows. He exhibited with groups like "M 57" and the Hollar Society. He was invited to about 200 group exhibitions both in his home country and abroad. He also had about 100 of his own art shows in Czechoslovakia (which is now the Czech Republic). He had about ten more solo shows in other countries.

In 2008, he received a very important award. The President of the Czech Republic, Václav Klaus, gave him the Czech Medal of Merit. This award recognized his amazing contributions to art.
