Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jasim bin Jabir (Arabic: جاسم بن جابر), also known as Raqraqi, was a famous pirate in the 1800s. He was active in the Persian Gulf, a sea area between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.

A Pirate's Base

Jasim bin Jabir had his main base at a place called Khawr al Udayd. From there, he would attack ships belonging to the British. These ships were sailing in the Persian Gulf. After taking valuable items from the ships, his team would transport the stolen goods, known as 'booty', inland using caravans.

The Attack on Khawr al Udayd

In May 1836, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, Khalifa bin Shabkhout, decided to act. He got permission from the British authorities to attack Khawr al Udayd. During this attack, a fierce battle took place. The houses and fort at Khawr al Udayd were destroyed.

Finding Refuge in Doha

After his base was attacked, Jasim bin Jabir needed a new safe place. In September 1836, he found refuge in Doha, a city in what is now Qatar. The leader of Doha was warned by the British not to give shelter to bin Jabir, but he chose not to listen.

Doha Faces Consequences

Jasim bin Jabir continued his pirate activities. In February 1841, he captured a British ship near Ras al-Khaimah. Because Doha kept providing him with a safe place, British forces decided to punish the city. They attacked Doha with cannons from their ships, a process called 'bombardment'. This was a direct result of Doha continuing to help the pirate.
