Jasmine Twitty facts for kids
Jasmine Twitty (born December 4, 1989) is an American judge who served in the municipal court of Easley, South Carolina. She made history in August 2015 when she became an associate judge at just 25 years old. At that time, she was the youngest person ever appointed or elected as a municipal court judge in the United States. Her record was later surpassed in 2021 by Matthew Bradley, who became a municipal court judge in Dinosaur, Colorado, at age 24.
Her Path to the Court
Jasmine Twitty studied political science at the College of Charleston. Before becoming a judge, she worked as a night clerk for the Greenville County Bond Court. To become a judge, she completed a special training program and passed a certification test. She was sworn in as a judge when she was 25. In South Carolina, judges for certain courts, called "summary courts," do not need to have a law degree (a J.D.) to be appointed. This means they don't have to go to law school for that specific type of judge role.
Making a Difference
Outside of her work as a judge, Jasmine Twitty is very active in her community. She often volunteers at the Urban League of the Upstate, an organization that helps people in the community. She also helped start a group called "LeadHER." This group focuses on helping women in the Upstate area grow in their careers and become leaders. In October 2020, she was recognized in Forbes magazine's "Trailblazer" series for her historic achievement in the legal field.
