Jason C. Ervin, born on May 7, 1974, is an American politician. He works on the Chicago City Council, which is like the city's main governing group. In 2010, he became an alderman for Chicago's 28th ward. A ward is a specific area or neighborhood in the city.

Jason Ervin's Education and First Jobs

Jason Ervin went to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He also studied at Governors State University, where he received a Master of Public Administration. Before joining the Chicago City Council, he was the village manager of Maywood, Illinois. He is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), which means he is an expert in accounting. He graduated from Morgan Park Academy.

Jason Ervin's Role as an Alderman

In 2010, the mayor at the time, Richard M. Daley, chose Jason Ervin to become the alderman for the 28th Ward. This happened after the previous alderman, Ed Smith, retired. Since then, Jason Ervin has been reelected several times. He won elections in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023.

What an Alderman Does

As an alderman, Jason Ervin helps make decisions for the city of Chicago. He is the leader of the Committee on The Budget and Government Operations. This committee is very important because it looks after the city's money and how the government works. He also serves on other committees, including:

  • Aviation (about airports and air travel)
  • Committees & Rules (about how the City Council operates)
  • Contract Oversight & Equity (making sure city contracts are fair)
  • Finance (more about the city's money)
  • Pedestrian & Traffic Safety (keeping people safe on streets)
  • Transportation (about roads, buses, and trains)

Working with Chicago Mayors

In the 2019 Chicago mayoral election, Jason Ervin supported Toni Preckwinkle. However, Lori Lightfoot was elected mayor instead. At first, Ervin and Mayor Lightfoot had some disagreements. But over time, he became one of her strongest supporters in the City Council. He even supported her when she tried to be re-elected in the 2023 Chicago mayoral election, though she was not successful.
