Jason Harbour facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jason Harbour is a bay about 1 mile (1.6 km) wide. It's located on the north side of Cumberland West Bay on South Georgia.

Swedish explorers first mapped and named Jason Harbour between 1901 and 1904. This was during the Swedish Antarctic Expedition led by Otto Nordenskiöld. The bay had been visited earlier in 1894 by a ship named Jason, captained by C.A. Larsen. This is how the harbour got its name.

Exploring Jason Harbour's Features

Many interesting places inside and around Jason Harbour have been mapped by different groups exploring Antarctica. Most of the features mentioned below were mapped and named by the Discovery Investigations (DI) team in 1929.

Boat Harbor and Breakwater Rocks

Boat Harbor is a small, round harbour found on the east side of Jason Harbour. Its name first appeared on a British map in 1930.

A group of rocks called the Breakwater Rocks stretches across the southern entrance to Boat Harbor. These rocks were first called "The Breakwater." However, in 1957, explorers realized the name was a bit confusing. The rocks weren't in a straight line like a wall. So, the name was changed to "Breakwater Rocks" to better describe them.

Little Jason Lagoon and Its Surroundings

Wood Point marks the entrance to Little Jason Lagoon to the north. Little Jason Lagoon is a nearly round body of water, about 0.4 nautical miles (0.7 km) across. It sits at the very end of Jason Harbour.

A narrow strip of land separates the lagoon from the main harbour. The channel leading into Little Jason Lagoon is so narrow that the first explorers called it "Nogood Lagoon." Later, local people knew it as "Little Jason." So, the name "Little Jason Lagoon" was approved to match local use.

The narrow strip of land ends at Lagoon Point. This point was first called "Bluff Point" but was renamed on a British map in 1930. On the same narrow piece of land, you'll find The Split Pin. This is a unique rock formation with two peaks, standing about 12 meters (39 feet) tall.

Other Important Points

Tor Point forms the eastern side of the entrance to Jason Harbour. Its name also appeared on a British map in 1930. To the west of the harbour, you can see Diamond Peak rising high.
