Jason Reolon is a talented jazz pianist from South Africa. He was born on November 2, 1976. His parents, Bobby Gien and Josie Gien, were also famous jazz musicians. His dad was a drummer and his mom was a singer!

Jason won a big award in 2001 for being the best jazz pianist. It was called the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) National Overseas Scholarship. He used this scholarship to study music in New York City in 2004. His jazz band, Breakfast Included, also won the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters competition twice! Jason has performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, a really big music event.

Jason's Musical Journey

Jason studied music at the University of Cape Town's College of Music. He earned a special degree in jazz music in 2001. Since then, he has also taught music there part-time.

Breakfast Included

Jason Reolon helped start the jazz band Breakfast Included in 1999. The original band had four members:

  • Dominic Peters on double bass
  • David Poole on saxophone

They released their first album, named Breakfast Included, in 2001. Their second album, Night Work Ahead, came out in 2004. This band won the "Old Mutual Jazz Encounters" competition in both 2000 and 2001.

Today, Breakfast Included is a five-person band. The current members are:

  • Melanie Schultz on vocals
  • Buddy Wells on saxophone
  • Wesley Rustin on double bass

The Restless Natives

The Restless Natives is another cool jazz group that Jason plays with. It's a five-person band that plays modern jazz music. The members are:

  • Kesivan Naidoo on drums
  • Jason Reolon on piano
  • Chris Engel on alto and baritone saxophone
  • Shane Cooper on double bass
  • Lee Thomson on trumpet and flugelhorn

The Jason Reolon Trio

Jason also has his own group called The Jason Reolon Trio. This band has three members:

  • Jason Reolon on piano
  • Heinrich Goosen on drums
  • Wesley Rustin on double bass

Their first album, Off the Record, was released in 2008. It was recorded live during a show in Cape Town in 2007.
