Jaume Balagueró Bernat (born November 2, 1968) is a Spanish film director and writer. He is well-known for making exciting horror movies. His most famous work is the REC film series.

Early Life and Education

Jaume Balagueró was born in Lleida, Spain. He grew up in Barcelona. He went to the University of Barcelona. There, he studied communications and photography. He finished his degree in communication sciences in 1991. In 1992, Balagueró started working as a film journalist. He also hosted a radio show called “La espuma de los días” on Radio Hospitalet.

Film Career Highlights

Early Short Films

In 1994, Balagueró started making films using 35mm film. His first short film was called Alicia (1994). This film won an award for Best Short Film at the Sitges Film Festival. He then made another short film, Days without Light (1995). This film also did very well at film festivals.

First Feature Films

Balagueró directed his first full-length movie, The Nameless, in 1999. This movie was based on a book by Ramsey Campbell. It was shown at many film festivals around the world. It won several awards, including Best Film at the Fant-Asia Film Festival.

Three years later, he released the scary movie Darkness (2002). This was his first movie made in English. It was released in the U.S. in 2004. In 2005, Balagueró released his third film, a ghost story called Fragile. It starred famous actors like Calista Flockhart. Also in 2002, he helped direct a music documentary called OT: la película.

Television and REC Series

In 2006, Balagueró worked on a TV project called Películas para no dormir (which means "6 Films to Keep You Awake"). He directed the fourth film in this series, called To Let. This project was a new version of an old TV show called Historias Para No Dormir. It featured six horror episodes directed by different Spanish filmmakers.

Balagueró started working on REC (2007) in early 2007. This movie became very popular. He also directed the thriller film Sleep Tight. Later, he directed REC 4: Apocalypse and helped write its script. He also wrote the script for REC 3: Genesis.
