Early Life and Art Studies
Jaume Morera was born in Lleida, a city in Spain. His family had moved there for business. He later moved to Madrid to study painting. He learned about landscape painting at a famous art school called the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. His teacher there was Carlos de Haes, who was also a well-known landscape painter.
Studying in Rome
In 1874, Jaume was chosen for a special opportunity. He became one of the first students at the new "Academia de España en Roma" (Spanish Academy in Rome). While in Rome, he painted many scenes of the Italian countryside. He used a style called Academic art. This style focused on traditional methods and careful drawing.
Life as a Painter
After returning to Spain in 1877, Jaume lived in Madrid. However, he always stayed connected to his hometown of Lleida. From Madrid, he traveled a lot, often with his old teacher, Carlos de Haes. They visited countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.
Exhibitions and Awards
Jaume Morera created many paintings during his travels. He showed these artworks at the annual National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Spain. He won several medals for his amazing landscape paintings.
Family Life
In 1900, Jaume married María Felisa Alday. She had taken care of his teacher, Carlos de Haes, before he passed away. The couple lived on a farm near a small village. This village was located between Madrid and the Basque Country.
His Art and Legacy
Jaume Morera loved painting landscapes that looked like those from northern Europe. He spent a lot of time painting in the Sierra de Guadarrama, a mountain range in Spain. He also painted along the coast of Northern Spain, near a place called Algorta. He passed away in Madrid.
The Museum in Lleida
In 1915, Jaume returned to his hometown of Lleida. He helped to create the "Museu d'Art Modern de Lleida" (Modern Art Museum of Lleida). A big part of this museum showed paintings by Carlos de Haes. These paintings were left to Jaume in Haes' will. Jaume's help was so important that the museum was renamed the Museu d'Art Jaume Morera in 1924. It was named after him to honor his contributions.
His Brother
Jaume Morera also had a brother named Magí Morera i Galícia. Magí was a politician and a poet.
