Jaume Roig was an important doctor and writer who lived in the 1400s. He was born in València, a city in Spain, in the early 15th century and passed away in April 1478 in Benimàmet. He is best known for writing a famous book called Espill, which means Mirror. This book was written in the Valencian/Catalan language.

Jaume Roig is considered one of the three most important writers of the 15th century in the Catalan language. The famous American poet Henry W. Longfellow even chose him, along with Ausiàs March and Isabel de Villena, to represent the literature of that time.

Jaume Roig's Family History

Jaume Roig came from a family with roots in Catalonia. His great-grandfather moved from Mataró to València. There, he became a jurat, which was an important role in the local government.

His grandfather was a notary, someone who prepares legal documents. He was also involved in both politics and medicine. Jaume Roig's father, who was also named Jaume Roig, was often called Jaume Roig lo vell (Jaume Roig the old). He was a member of the local council and helped examine other doctors.

Education and Medical Career

Jaume Roig "lo jove" (the young one) was born in València in the early 15th century. He became a Mestre (Master) in Medicine. He likely studied at two well-known universities of his time. These were the University of Lleida, which was founded around 1300 by King James II, and the University of Paris.

Thanks to his family's good reputation, Jaume Roig became a very respected doctor. He worked for the Royal Family, the local government, and even the church. For more than ten years, he also served as the Academic Examiner for other doctors. This meant he helped decide if new doctors were good enough to practice medicine.

Personal Life and Family

By the year 1441, Jaume Roig was married to Isabel Pellicer. They had six children together. All of their children lived longer than Jaume Roig did. Three of their children later joined the clergy, meaning they became priests or nuns.

About the Book Espill

Espill (The Mirror) is Jaume Roig's most famous work. The book is written as if the narrator is speaking to his fictional nephew. In the story, the narrator shares many examples and experiences. He tells tales about different women and his own fictional marriages.

Some experts believe that the strong opinions expressed by the narrator in the book do not necessarily mean that Jaume Roig himself held those same views. It is important to remember that the book is a work of fiction from a different time period.

Espill's Influence and Legacy

A famous singer named Raimon even turned a part of Espill into a song. This particular section of the book tells a unique story about a hostel in Paris. In this story, the guests are said to be fed human flesh. This shows how parts of Jaume Roig's work continue to be remembered and adapted even today.
