Jaunpur district-an ancient name Jagdamnipur is a district in Varanasi division of Uttar Pradesh state in India. Jaunpur town serves as the district headquarters. The district has 6 tahsils (Shahganj, Badlapur, MachhaliShahar, Jaunpur, Mariyahu and Kerakat), 3 Lok Sabha constituencies and 10 Vidhan Sabha constituencies.
History
This town is estd. in 14th century by Firoz Tuglak in the memory of Sultan Muhammad. The actual name of Sultan muhammad was Jauna Khan. He named this city Jaunpur. About 1394 AD Malik Sarvar estabilished Sharky empire. During his period a number of mosques were constructed there.
