Javokhir Sindarov (born on December 8, 2005) is a talented Uzbek chess grandmaster. He is known as a chess prodigy because he achieved the Grandmaster title at a very young age: 12 years, 10 months, and 8 days. Javokhir has won his country's national championship twice. He was also a key member of the Uzbek team that won the 44th Chess Olympiad, a major international chess competition.

Javokhir Sindarov won the 2025 Chess World Cup, which is a huge achievement in the chess world. This victory also meant he qualified for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, where players compete for a chance to challenge the reigning World Chess Champion. His coach and helper for these big events is Mukhiddin Madaminov.

Who is Javokhir Sindarov?

Javokhir Sindarov was born in Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, on December 8, 2005. From a young age, he showed amazing skill in chess.

Becoming a Chess Grandmaster

Javokhir quickly climbed the ranks in the chess world. He earned the title of International Master (IM) in October 2017. An International Master is a high-level chess player, just below a Grandmaster.

Early Achievements and Titles

To become a Grandmaster (GM), a player needs to achieve certain high-level results called "norms" in international tournaments. Javokhir earned his first GM norm at the Alekhine Memorial in June 2018. He achieved his second norm at the World Junior Chess Championship in September of the same year. During this time, his chess rating also improved to 2500 points, showing his growing strength.

In October 2018, Javokhir scored his third and final GM norm at the First Saturday tournament. This made him one of the youngest Grandmasters in history at that time. FIDE, the international chess federation, officially awarded him the Grandmaster title in March 2019.

Exciting World Cup Matches

Javokhir Sindarov has participated in several Chess World Cup tournaments, where he has shown his ability to compete against top players.

World Cup 2021 Highlights

He qualified for the Chess World Cup 2021. Even though he was ranked 121st, he surprised many by defeating Alireza Firouzja, who was ranked 8th, in a tiebreak match during the second round. Tiebreaks are extra games played when players have the same score. Javokhir continued to play well, reaching the final 32 players before being eliminated by Kacper Piorun in the fourth round.

World Cup 2023 Challenges

In the Chess World Cup 2023, Javokhir once again showed his strength. He defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who was the 10th highest-ranked player in the tournament, during the third round. He was later eliminated by Arjun Erigaisi after a tough match.

Medals and Milestones

Javokhir has continued to achieve great things in chess, earning medals and improving his international ranking.

Asian Games Success

In October 2023, Javokhir played in the Asian Games. He won a bronze medal in the individual competition. He also played a crucial role on board 2 for the Uzbekistan team, scoring 6 out of 8 possible points. His team also earned a bronze medal, finishing behind India and Iran. After the Asian Games, he competed in the Qatar Masters Open tournament. He played very well, scoring 6.5 out of 9 points and remaining undefeated throughout the event. These two tournaments helped him gain 22 rating points, showing his consistent improvement.

Reaching New Heights in Ratings

In November 2023, Javokhir took part in the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament. He finished in an impressive eighth place with 7 out of 11 points. He was among the top players for much of the tournament. His only loss was to Vidit Gujrathi, who eventually won the tournament. Despite this, Javokhir won four games, including one against Levon Aronian, a very strong player who was once ranked second in the world.

After the Grand Swiss tournament, Javokhir Sindarov's Elo rating went above 2700 for the first time. An Elo rating is a system used to calculate the relative skill levels of players in games like chess. Reaching 2700 is a significant milestone for a chess player. In June 2024, he played in the UzChess Cup Masters. He finished fifth and achieved a notable win against his fellow Uzbek player, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who is one of the world's top five players.

Winning the 2025 World Cup

Javokhir Sindarov entered the Chess World Cup 2025 as the sixteenth seed. He showed incredible skill and determination throughout the tournament. He defeated strong players like Yu Yangyi, Frederik Svane, and José Martínez Alcántara to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, he faced his countryman, Nodirbek Yakubboev. After winning a close match in the tiebreaks, Javokhir advanced to the finals.

In the finals, he played against Wei Yi. This match was not only for the World Cup title but also for a spot in the Candidates Tournament 2026. Javokhir drew the first two main games, and also the first tiebreak game. He then defeated Wei Yi in their second tiebreak game. With this victory, Javokhir Sindarov became the first player from Uzbekistan and the youngest player ever to win the Chess World Cup. He achieved this amazing feat at 19 years, 11 months, and 18 days old.
