Vidit Gujrathi (born 24 October 1994) is a famous chess grandmaster from India. He became a grandmaster in January 2013. He was the 30th player from India to earn this high title. Vidit is also one of only four Indian players to reach an Elo rating of over 2700 points. He has won two gold medals at the Chess Olympiad. He also earned a silver medal at the Asian Games. In 2023, he won the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2023. This win helped him become the third Indian player to qualify for the important Candidates Tournament.

Early Life and Achievements
Vidit Santosh Gujrathi was born in Nashik, India. His parents are Santosh Gujrathi and Nikita Santosh Gujrathi. He went to Fravashi Academy for his early schooling. Vidit started learning chess when he was very young.
In 2006, he took second place in the Asian Youth Championships. This was in the Under 12 age group. Because of this, he earned the title of FIDE Master.
In 2008, Vidit won the World Youth Chess Championship. He competed in the Open Under 14 section. He was the first Indian player to win this event. He scored 9 points out of 11 games. This win also helped him become an International Master.
He finished second in the Under 16 category of the World Youth Chess Championship in 2009. He scored 9 points, tying with the winner, S. P. Sethuraman. In January 2010, he reached a rating of 2500. This was an important step towards becoming a grandmaster.
In 2011, Vidit played in the World Junior Chess Championship in Chennai. This event was for players under 20 years old. He scored 8 points out of 11 games. This earned him his first "GM norm." A GM norm is a high-level performance needed to become a grandmaster.
Later in 2011, he played in the Nagpur International Open. He scored 8 points out of 11. He earned his second GM norm at this tournament. Vidit got his final GM norm in 2012. He was 18 years old at the time. This happened at the Rose Valley Kolkata Open Grandmasters' chess tournament. He finished third in that event.
In 2013, Vidit won a bronze medal. This was at the World Junior Chess Championship in Turkey. He competed in the Junior (Under 20) category. In the same year, he finished third in the Hyderabad International Grandmasters chess tournament. He won 150,000 Indian Rupees. By January 2014, his rating went past 2600 points.
Vidit tied for third place at the 2015 Asian Chess Championship. This result allowed him to play in the Chess World Cup 2015. However, he was eliminated in the first round. In 2017, he tied for the best score at the Dubai Open. He scored 7 points out of 9 games.
Recent Successes (2018–Present)
In 2018, Vidit won the Challenger event of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. He won by a full point and did not lose any games. He scored 9 points out of 13. This win meant he could play in the main Masters event in 2019.
At the 2019 tournament, he played very well. He scored 7 points out of 13 games. He even beat former world champion Vladimir Kramnik.
From November 22 to 26, 2019, he played in the Tata Steel Rapid and Blitz events. He was a wildcard player. He tied for eighth place with another wildcard player, Pentala Harikrishna. He also played in the Skilling Open. This was the first event of the Champions Chess Tour 2021.
Vidit was the captain of the Indian team that won a historic gold medal. This happened at the Online Chess Olympiad 2020.
In early 2022, Vidit played in the FIDE Grand Prix 2022. In the first part, he tied for second place in his group. In the second part, he finished second in his group.
Vidit qualified for the Chess World Cup 2023 based on his rating. He reached the round of 16 in the tournament. There, he beat Ian Nepomniachtchi to move on to the quarterfinals. This was his second time reaching the quarterfinals in a World Cup. He lost to Nijat Abasov in the quarterfinals. This meant he missed the chance to qualify for the Candidates Tournament that year.
He played in the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2023 from October 25 to November 5, 2023. He lost his first game. But then he won 7 of his next 10 games. He won the tournament with a score of 8½ points out of 11. By winning the Grand Swiss, Vidit qualified for the Candidates Tournament 2024. The All India Chess Federation announced that they would give financial help to Vidit, R Praggnanandhaa, and R Vaishali. This money was to help them prepare for the Candidates Tournament.
In the Candidates Tournament 2024, he finished in sixth place. He notably defeated Hikaru Nakamura in both of their games.
