Jaws: The Revenge is a scary movie from 1987. It is a thriller about a giant shark. This movie was the last one directed by Joseph Sargent. It is the third sequel (a movie that continues a story) to the famous film Jaws. It is also the fourth and final movie in the whole Jaws series.
Many movie critics did not like Jaws: The Revenge. The first three Jaws movies each took about two years to make. But Jaws: The Revenge was made very quickly, in less than nine months! Frank Baur, who helped make the movie, said it was the fastest a big movie had ever been planned and filmed in his 35 years of work. The movie was even nominated for seven Golden Raspberry Awards. These awards are given to the worst movies of the year.
What the Story is About
The story of Jaws: The Revenge goes back to the Brody family. They live on Amity Island. Martin Brody, the father, has passed away. His wife, Ellen (played by Lorraine Gary), believes that the fear of sharks caused his death.
Their youngest son, Sean (played by Mitchell Anderson), works as a police deputy on Amity Island. One day, while clearing a log from a buoy, a shark attacks and kills him. This happens during the Christmas season. His screams are not heard because of the loud ocean waves and people singing carols nearby.
Ellen is sure that the shark purposely targeted Sean. She believes it is seeking revenge on her family. She then visits her older son, Michael (played by Lance Guest), in the Bahamas. Michael is a marine biologist. Ellen worries that he will be the next one attacked. She tries to convince him to find a new job on land.
While in the Bahamas, Ellen meets Hoagie (played by Michael Caine). They start dating. After having bad dreams and seeing more shark attacks, Ellen becomes convinced. She believes the shark has followed her family all the way to the Bahamas. She decides to take a boat out to sea by herself. She plans to face the shark.
The book version of the movie, written by Hank Searls, adds an interesting idea. It suggests that the shark might be controlled by a vengeful voodoo witch doctor. This witch doctor has a problem with the Brody family. So, the shark's revenge might be magical, with the witch doctor using the shark as a tool.
