Life and Career of Joseph Sargent

Early Life and Military Service

Joseph Sargent was born Giuseppe Danielle Sorgente in Jersey City, New Jersey. His parents, Maria and Domenico, were from Italy. Sargent served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He fought in a very important battle called the Battle of the Bulge.

From Acting to Directing

Sargent started his career as an actor. He appeared in many films and television shows. He had a small part as a soldier in the 1953 movie From Here to Eternity. On that movie set, he met his first wife, Mary Carver.

In the mid-1950s, Sargent decided to become a director. Over the next 15 years, he directed episodes for popular TV series. These included Lassie, The Invaders, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and even a Star Trek episode called "The Corbomite Maneuver".

Directing Feature Films and TV Movies

In 1969, Joseph Sargent directed his first full-length movie. It was a science fiction thriller called Colossus: The Forbin Project. He also directed The Man in 1972, starring James Earl Jones.

During the 1970s, Sargent directed both TV movies and feature films. Some of his notable works from this time include The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. He also directed TV movies like Hustling and Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring. Another important TV movie was Tribes. In 1974, he won his first Directors Guild of America Award for The Marcus-Nelson Murders. This TV movie was the pilot for the famous Kojak series.

Later Career and Jaws: The Revenge

In the 1980s, Sargent directed mini-series such as Manions of America, which featured Pierce Brosnan. He also directed Space.

In 1987, he directed Jaws: The Revenge. This was the third sequel to Steven Spielberg's classic 1975 movie Jaws. The film received many negative reviews. After Jaws: The Revenge, Sargent focused mostly on TV movies. These included The Karen Carpenter Story and The Long Island Incident. He also directed a 2007 remake of the movie Sybil.

Other Contributions and Legacy

Joseph Sargent and his wife, Carolyn Nelson Sargent, helped start the Deaf West Theatre. This theater group creates plays for both deaf and hearing audiences. Sargent also spent time teaching future filmmakers. He was a Senior Filmmaker-in-Residence at the American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles.
