Exploring Jay Nixon State Park
Jay Nixon State Park covers about 1,230 acres of land. When the park was first announced, it didn't have any special buildings or visitor centers. The only way to get into the park was by using the Ozark Trail, which is a long hiking path.
Park Access and Current Status
Even though the park was announced as open, it was very hard to get into. Because of this, the park's official website was updated in February 2017 to say that it was closed and not accessible to the public. This means that for now, visitors cannot go inside the park.
Why the Park's Name is Special
The name of the new park, Jay Nixon State Park, caused some discussion. On January 12, 2017, two important people in Missouri's government, state senator Gary Romine and state representative Paul Fitzwater, suggested changing the park's name.
The Idea to Rename the Park
They filed official papers to rename the park to Proffitt Mountain State Park. This shows that sometimes, even the name of a new park can be a topic of debate among people and politicians.
