Jayne Mansfield's Pink Palace was a huge house, called a mansion. It was bought and decorated with lots of pink paint and items by American actress Jayne Mansfield in 1957. This famous pink house was later torn down in 2002.
The Story of the Pink Palace
In November 1957, before she married Mickey Hargitay, Jayne Mansfield bought a very large house. It had 40 rooms and was in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles. This house used to belong to a singer named Rudy Vallée.
Much of the money to buy the house came from her grandfather. Jayne Mansfield then had the entire house painted pink. She added many unique pink features. These included cupid statues with pink lights and pink fur in the bathrooms. There was even a pink heart-shaped bathtub! She also had a fountain that sprayed pink champagne. Because of all this, she called it the "Pink Palace." She said it was a "pink landmark."
Her husband, Mickey Hargitay, was good at building things. He used to be a plumber and carpenter. He built a special pink heart-shaped swimming pool for the house. Jayne Mansfield was very clever about decorating. She wrote to many companies asking for free samples of furniture and building supplies. She received over $150,000 worth of free items. She only paid $76,000 for the mansion itself. This was a lot of money back then, as the average house cost less than $7,500.
What Happened to the Pink Palace?
After Jayne Mansfield passed away, the Pink Palace was sold. Other famous people lived there, including Ringo Starr from The Beatles and singer Engelbert Humperdinck.
In 2002, Engelbert Humperdinck sold the house to some builders. The Pink Palace was then torn down in November of that year.
