Jean-Baptiste-François Bompart (born in Lorient in 1757, died in Bagnols in 1842) was a brave French naval officer. He started his career as a privateer, which was like a legal pirate working for the government. Later, he became a high-ranking admiral in the French navy. He was also related to another famous admiral, Maxime de Bompart.

Bompart was born in Lorient, a city in France known for its port. From a young age, he was interested in the sea. He began his career as a privateer. Privateers were sailors who had permission from their government to attack enemy ships. This was a way to help their country during wartime.
Fighting in the American War
As a young officer, Bompart joined the American Revolutionary War. This war was fought between Great Britain and its thirteen colonies in North America. France supported the American colonies. Bompart gained valuable experience during these battles at sea.
Captaining the Embuscade
Later, Bompart became the captain of a French warship called the Embuscade. In 1793, his ship had an important fight. The Embuscade met a British warship, HMS Boston, near New Jersey. This battle was known as the Action of 31 July 1793. It was a tough fight between the two ships.
Becoming an Admiral
Bompart showed great leadership and bravery. Because of his skills, he was promoted to the rank of admiral. This meant he was in charge of many ships and sailors. He led a big French fleet in an important mission called the Expédition d'Irlande. This mission aimed to help Irish rebels against British rule.
However, this mission did not go as planned. Bompart's fleet faced a major defeat. This happened at the Battle of Tory Island. The British navy won this battle. It was a difficult moment for Bompart and the French navy.
Later Years and Retirement
After many years of service, Bompart retired from the navy in 1801. He decided to leave because of disagreements about politics. He spent his later years away from naval duties. Jean-Baptiste-François Bompart passed away in 1842 in Bagnols.
