Jean-Luc Thérier (born October 7, 1945, died July 31, 2019) was a famous French rally driver. Rally driving is a type of car racing. It happens on public or private roads, which can be dirt, gravel, or asphalt. Jean-Luc was known for his exciting driving style. He was one of the top drivers in the early years of the World Rally Championship.

In 1973, he was the driver who earned the most points in the first World Rally Championship. He was also the only driver to win three big events that year. Back then, the championship title was given to car manufacturers, not individual drivers. So, Jean-Luc's team, Alpine-Renault, won the title.

A Champion's Early Career

Jean-Luc Thérier often raced in an Alpine-Renault A110 car. He showed his talent early on. In 1970, he won two important races: the Rallye Sanremo and the Acropolis Rally. These wins helped him become well-known in the rally world.

His Amazing Year: 1973

The year 1973 was very special for Jean-Luc. He won the same two events again, the 1973 Rallye Sanremo and the 1973 Acropolis Rally. He also added another victory, the 1973 Rallye de Portugal. Winning three major events in one year was a huge achievement. It showed everyone how skilled he was behind the wheel.

More Victories and Different Cars

Jean-Luc continued to win races in different cars. In 1974, he won the Press-on-Regardless Rally in the United States. For this race, he drove a Renault 17 Gordini. Later, in 1980, he won the Tour de Corse rally in France. This time, he was driving a powerful Porsche 911 SC.

Racing in the Monte Carlo Rally

The Monte Carlo Rally is one of the most famous and challenging rally races. Jean-Luc Thérier competed in this race 13 times. He raced there between 1969 and 1984. His best result in the Monte Carlo Rally was finishing second in 1971.

End of His Racing Career

Jean-Luc's racing career ended in early 1985. He was taking part in the Paris to Dakar rally when he had a serious accident. He suffered severe injuries, which meant he could no longer compete. Jean-Luc Thérier passed away on July 31, 2019, at the age of 73, after a long illness. He is remembered as a true legend of rally driving.
