Jean-Michel Atlan (born January 23, 1913 – died February 12, 1960) was a French artist. He is known for his colorful and abstract paintings.
Early Life and Beginnings
Jean-Michel Atlan was born in Constantine, Algeria, which was part of France at the time. He came from an Algerian Jewish family. In 1930, when he was 17, he moved to Paris, France. He studied philosophy at the famous Sorbonne university.
Atlan began painting on his own in 1941, teaching himself art. During a difficult time in 1942, he faced challenges because of his Jewish heritage.
Artistic Journey
In 1944, Atlan published a small book of his poems. Soon after, he had his very first art show at the Gallerie Arc en Ciel.
A big moment for Atlan was in 1946 when he met another artist named Asger Jorn. This meeting led him to join an important art group called CoBrA. This group was known for its modern and expressive art. Atlan's art studio in Paris became a popular meeting spot for the CoBrA artists.
In 1955, Atlan showed his work at the Gallerie Carpenter. Two of his well-known paintings are Le Kahena and Composition. His art often featured bold colors and shapes, showing feelings and ideas rather than realistic scenes.
Jean-Michel Atlan passed away in Paris in 1960 and was buried in the Cimetière du Montparnasse.
