Rose Jean Coulter is a former politician from Northern Ireland. She was known as a "unionist" politician. This means she believed Northern Ireland should remain part of the United Kingdom. She played a part in politics during an important time for the region.

Jean Coulter's Political Journey

Jean Coulter was born in the Shankill Road area of Belfast. She went to the Girls' Model School. After school, she worked as a solicitor's clerk. She also became active in the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP). This was an important political party in Northern Ireland.

Becoming an Assembly Member

In June 1973, Jean Coulter worked with two other politicians, John Laird and Hugh Smyth. They formed a group called the West Belfast Loyalist Coalition. This group ran in the 1973 Northern Ireland Assembly election. All three of them were elected to the Assembly. They represented the Belfast West area. Jean Coulter was also supported by another party, the Vanguard Progressive Unionist Party.

Changing Political Parties

In January 1974, Brian Faulkner stepped down as the leader of the UUP. After this, Jean Coulter decided to rejoin the UUP. The West Belfast Loyalist Coalition then stopped being active. In 1975, she was elected again. This time, she became a member of the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention as a UUP member.

Later Political Views

Jean Coulter did not run for election again after 1975. However, she remained interested in politics. She continued to share her strong opinions on political matters. She did not support the Belfast Agreement. This was a very important peace agreement for Northern Ireland. By the time of the 2005 UK general election, she was a supporter of the Democratic Unionist Party.
