Jean François Denis de Keredern de Trobriand was born on January 29, 1730, in Plouigneau, France. He came from a family with many members who served in the French Navy. He later married Geneviève Poissonnier des Perrières.
He began his naval career on April 1, 1748. He joined as a Gardes de la Marine, which was a special training program for young officers.
He was promoted to Ensign on May 23, 1754. This was an important step up in his naval rank.
On January 15, 1762, he became a Lieutenant.
Voyages and Discoveries
In 1773, Trobriand was given command of the ship Étoile. This ship was a fluyt, a type of sailing vessel used for cargo. He sailed Étoile from Lorient on long voyages to China and around the Indian Ocean.
Exploring New Lands
During his travels, Trobriand explored Denis Island in 1773. This island was named in his honor. In 1775, his ship Étoile visited Borneo. There, he was offered two islands for France, with the largest one being Lemukutan.
Important Missions
While in the region, Étoile was ordered to take part in a mission. This mission was to deal with a local leader, Pangaram Serip, King of Koti. He was responsible for a serious incident involving the crew of a merchant ship called Épreuve.
Étoile joined forces with two other French ships, the frigate Indiscrète and Badine. Together, they took action against the port controlled by Pangaram Serip. They managed to stop many ships and restore order in the area.
Later Career and Battle of Ushant
Trobriand was promoted to Captain on April 4, 1777. This was a very high rank in the French Navy.
In 1778, he commanded the 50-gun ship Amphion. His ship was part of a large French fleet. This fleet was led by Admiral d'Orvilliers.
Battle of Ushant
On July 27, 1778, Trobriand and Amphion took part in the Battle of Ushant. This was a major naval battle during the American Revolutionary War. It was fought off the coast of France.
During the battle, Amphion was badly damaged. Trobriand had to return to Brest, a French port, while the battle was still happening. Because of this, he was replaced as the commander of Amphion.
Final Years
In 1779 and 1780, Trobriand commanded another ship, the 64-gun Alexandre. In February 1780, he moved to command the ship Éveillé. However, he sadly passed away just a few days later.
