Jean Juventin (born March 9, 1928 – died May 28, 2019) was an important French politician. He served as the mayor of Papeete, a major city in French Polynesia, for many years, from 1977 to 1995.

He also held other big jobs. He was the president of the Assembly of French Polynesia twice, from 1988 to 1991 and again from 1992 to 1995. Think of the Assembly as the local government that makes laws for French Polynesia.

On top of that, he was a "deputy" in the French National Assembly. A deputy is like a representative who helps make laws for the whole country of France. He served in this role from 1978 to 1986 and again from 1993 to 1997. He was a member of the Rally for the Republic political party.

Jean Juventin's Early Life and Career

Jean Juventin started his career as a school teacher. Later, he became a school director, which means he was in charge of a school.

He joined a political group called Here Ai'a. This party was formed in 1965 by John Teariki. It was created to replace another party that had been closed down. The Here Ai'a party wanted more self-rule for French Polynesia. This means they wanted the local people to have more say in how their islands were governed.

In 1967, Jean Juventin was chosen to be part of the Council of Government. This council was elected by the Territorial Assembly, which was another important local government body.

Becoming Mayor and National Deputy

Jean Juventin became the mayor of Papeete on March 13, 1977. People liked his work, so they voted for him again in 1983 and 1989. He served as mayor for nearly 20 years!

In March 1978, he was also elected to the French National Assembly. This is the main law-making body for France. He was re-elected in 1981 and served until 1986. After a break, he was elected again in 1993 and served until 1997. This shows he was important both in his home region and in the wider French government.

Leading the Here Ai'a Party

In 1983, a sad event happened: John Teariki, who started the Here Ai'a party, passed away. After this, Jean Juventin became the new president of the party. This meant he was the main leader of the group that worked for more self-rule in French Polynesia.
