Jean Lebeuf facts for kids
Jean Lebeuf (born March 7, 1687 – died April 10, 1760) was a famous French historian. He spent his life studying the past, especially the history of Paris.
Early Life and Education
Jean Lebeuf was born in a town called Auxerre, France. His father worked for the local government. Jean started school in Auxerre. Later, he moved to Paris to study at the Collège Sainte-Barbe.
He was a very smart student. People knew him for his wide knowledge. He learned a lot about the Middle Ages. He also knew where to find information and how to use it.
Lebeuf's Work as a Historian
Even though he learned much from books, Lebeuf was also an archaeologist. He traveled a lot across France on foot. During these trips, he looked at old buildings and statues. He also visited libraries to find old documents. He made many notes and drawings of what he found.
Lebeuf also wrote letters to other smart people of his time. Some of these letters were later published. He wrote many articles too. In 1740, he became a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres. This was a very important group for scholars. He wrote many papers for this group. Jean Lebeuf passed away in Paris.
Research on Paris History
Lebeuf's most important work was about the city of Paris. He wrote a collection of essays about the history of Paris. He also wrote a book called Histoire de la ville et de tout le diocèse de Paris. This book was based on many original sources.
Later, he updated his book because new discoveries were made. Other historians helped to finish and add to his work. This made his research even more complete.
