Jean Sophia Pigott's Life
Jean Sophia Pigott was born in Leixlip, Ireland, in 1845. She had a brother named William Frederick Pigott. William became a missionary in China. He worked with Hudson Taylor, who led a group called the China Inland Mission. This mission helped share Christian beliefs in China.
It is thought that William shared his sister Jean's hymns with Hudson Taylor. Taylor really liked Jean Pigott's hymn, "Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting." He even called it his own "life song." This hymn was very special to him. He was known to whistle the tune during difficult times. For example, when her brother William and other missionaries faced danger in China.
Jean started writing and publishing poems when she was young. By the time she was 35, she had written a book of her poems. It was called "A Royal Service." The words to her most famous hymn, "Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting," first appeared in this book. Jean Sophia Pigott died in Leixlip, County Kildare, Ireland. She was 37 years old when she passed away on October 12, 1882. She is buried there.
