The Jefferson School is a special old school building located in Clifton Forge, Virginia. It is also known by other names like East Elementary and Clifton Forge Elementary East. This building has a long history and was added to the list of important places called the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

A Look at the Building

The Jefferson School was built in 1926. It is a two-story building made of brick. The style of the building is called Colonial Revival. This means it looks a bit like older, classic American buildings.

The school sits on a strong concrete base. It has many windows arranged in rows. The main entrance is set back a little from the front of the building.

What Was Inside?

When the school first opened in 1926, it did not have a library or a cafeteria. These important parts were added later in 1937. At that time, the school also got new things like water fountains, a public address system (for making announcements), and a projector.

More improvements came in 1952. A two-story section was added to the building. This new part included more classrooms for students. It also had a large room that could be used as both an auditorium for performances and a gymnasium for sports. An Industrial arts shop was added, where students could learn practical skills. The principal, who is the head of the school, finally got an office.

A Special History

From 1926 until 1965, the Jefferson School played a very important role. It was the main school for African-Americans in the Clifton Forge community. Students attended primary school (like elementary school) and secondary school (like middle and high school) here.

There was an even older Jefferson School building from 1902. This older building is located very close to the 1926 school.

Becoming a Historic Place

Because of its history and unique architecture, the Jefferson School was recognized as a special place. On December 27, 2010, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings and sites across the United States that are important to history. It helps protect them for future generations.
