Early Life and Growing Up
Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman was born in 1984 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was adopted when he was just 12 days old. His last name, Bowyer-Chapman, comes from his adoptive parents' last names joined together. His younger biological brother is Cleyon Laing, who is a professional football player for the Toronto Argonauts.
Jeffrey grew up in a small town called Rimbey, Alberta. This town had less than 2,000 people and was mostly Caucasian. He has said that growing up there as a biracial person was sometimes challenging. He felt he had to learn a lot and be very grown-up in unusual situations from a young age.
When he was a teenager, Jeffrey moved to Vancouver. At age 15, he started traveling the world as a model. He visited places like Europe, South Africa, and many parts of North America. Later, at 21, he moved back to Vancouver and began to focus more on acting. After his first movie, he lived in New York for seven years. In September 2016, he moved to Los Angeles to continue his career.
Jeffrey's Career Journey
Starting as a Model
Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman began his modeling career when he was 15. Friends and teachers encouraged him to try it. His first photo shoot was in Calgary. By the time he was 18 or 19, he was earning good money. He worked on ads and campaigns for popular brands like Levi's and American Apparel. He is represented by a well-known modeling agency called Wilhelmina Models.
Acting Roles and TV Shows
While modeling, Jeffrey also started acting. His first movie was Shock to the System in 2006. He was recognized early on, being named one of "Canada's Coolest" by Out magazine in 2007. He also appeared in Mwinda magazine as one of "The 10 Most Beautiful Africans In Entertainment" in 2009.
He then appeared in TV series like Noah's Arc and The L Word. From 2009 to 2011, he had a regular role in the Syfy series Stargate Universe.
In 2012, he starred in the movie The Skinny. In 2015, he became a main cast member in the TV series Unreal. He played Jay, a reality TV producer. In 2016, he was in the comedy movie Dirty Grandpa. In 2018, Jeffrey joined the cast of American Horror Story for its eighth season, called Apocalypse.
Judging on Canada's Drag Race
In September 2019, Jeffrey was announced as one of the three main judges for the first season of Canada's Drag Race. This show is the Canadian version of RuPaul's Drag Race. During the show's airing, Jeffrey faced some challenges and negative comments from some viewers online. He even deleted his Twitter account because of it. He also mentioned feeling uncomfortable during production. In March 2021, it was announced that he would not return for the second season.
Despite the challenges, Jeffrey and his fellow Canada's Drag Race judges, Brooke Lynn Hytes and Stacey McKenzie, won an award. In May 2021, they won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Host or Presenter in a Factual or Reality/Competition Series.
